The September 2009 Meeting of the English-speaking Section of the Silk Route MotorCaravan Network.

An international group of English-speaking members, old and new, from England, Scotland, New Zealand, Norway, and USA met up on a glorious sunny weekend in September for our annual meeting. It was held at Senlac Wood campsite in Battle, close to the site of the famous Battle of Hastings between the French and the English in 1066.

There was an informal gathering on the Friday as various vans arrived, lots of chat and hugs and more than one tipple. For simplicity we all ate in our vans and afterwards, inevitably, congregated in the campsite bar for a general chat and to plan the weekend.

The weather was very kind to us so on Saturday morning the bar was abandoned and we had our first meeting sitting on a circle of chairs amongst the vans. We were all set the task of talking for 5 minutes describing ourselves, background and experiences. This sounds not at all attractive but was in fact fascinating and rewarding. We all had a new respect for each other after that.

The afternoon saw presentations of various topics, including journeys, with a slide show where appropriate, in the bar. These were courtesy of a computer projector provided by new members Roger & Sue Shuttleworth. Clive Barker gave a detailed presentation on communicating while abroad, and Bill Henley a talk on safety. We saw a wonderful selection of pictures from Russia (Ivan & Luda McLellan’s trip), Libya, Jordan, India, and other magical places. The evening was one long aperitif which gradually metamorphosed into a barbecue, lots of tasting and sharing and it continued well after dark. Most enjoyable.

The final session on Sunday morning, again in the open, was a wide-ranging discussion on the future direction of the English-speaking Section, which is now quite large and healthy. A lot of time was spent looking at each others’ vehicles, especially Martin Ryan and Caroline Down’s, a petrol/gas six-wheeler Volvo of obviously military origin and Sue and Roger Shuttleworth’s demountable Toyota. Don and Kim Greene had a small Mitsubishi truck-based 4/4 expedition vehicle, Clive and Ann Barker their somewhat larger Mercedes truck and of course Norman Seddon brought his pop-up roof Landrover. A lot of very useful tips and ideas can be got this way. Those of us with standard white campers felt rather overawed, although it was accepted by all that 4x2 vans can make very respectable journeys.

A new member, Ivan McLellan, from New Zealand, was welcomed and appointed official photographer. Larger than life, in more than one sense, he put forth strong and sometimes eccentric opinions and generally added spice to the proceedings. Don & Kim Greene passed Jack the Mexican Cactus to Martin Ryan and Caroline Down for safekeeping until they return to the UK next year. Erik Lea and Randi Sorlie from Norway turned up on foot, the ferries being inconvenient for van travel for just a weekend, bringing with them a bottle of Akvavit which was fully tested. Carl & Mary Hunter and Maureen Middleton also sent best wishes from Canada. Peter& Janet Milner sent their apologies as they were unable to be present due to ill-health.

Plans are already being made for next year’s meeting which will be held somewhere in central England on 3-5 September 2010.

Un groupe international de membres de langue anglaise, anciens et nouveaux, provenant d'Angleterre, Ecosse, Nouvelle Zélande, Norvège, et USA s'est réuni sous un soleil radieux pour son assemblée annuelle pendant un week-end de Septembre. C'était au camping de Senlac Wood, proche du lieu de la fameuse bataille de Hasting qui opposa les Français aux Anglais en 1066.

Le rassemblement du Vendredi fut informel, en fonction de l'arrivée des CCar, pour se terminer bien évidemment dans le bar du camping pour causer et organiser le week-end.

Le temps fut très clément, de sorte que samedi matin le bar fut abandonné et la première réunion eut lieu en disposant les chaises en cercle au centre des véhicules. Nous avons commencé par un tour de présentation de 5 minutes chacun pour exposer nos origines et expériences. Cela peut paraître trivial mais en fait ce fut passionnant et enrichissant. Il en est ressorti ensuite une bien meilleure compréhension réciproque.

L'après-midi fut consacrée à de nombreux sujets y compris les voyages, avec pour certains des projections de diapos dans le bar. Nous disposions d'un video-projecteur digital apporté par les nouveaux membres Roger & Sue Shuttleworth. Clive Barker fit un topo détaillé sur les moyens de communication lorsque l'on est sur la route, et Bill Henley un exposé sur la sécurité. Mentionnons particulièrement les photos de Russie (Ivan & Luda McLellan’s trip), Libye, Jordanie, Inde, et autres lieux magiques.

Le soir fut consacré à un long apéritif qui s'est progressivement transformé en barbecue, occasion de goûter et de partager jusqu'à tard après la tombée de la nuit. Que du bonheur. La session finale Dimanche matin, de nouveau en plein air, fut une discussion très ouverte sur l'orientation future de la section de langue anglaise maintenant qu'elle s'est renforcée et en bonne santé. Pas mal de temps fut consacré à l'examen des différents véhicules, en particulier le 6x6 Volvo de Martin Ryan et Caroline Down à carburants mixtes et d'origine militaire, ainsi que la cellule séparable du Toyota de Sue et Robert Shuttleworth. Dan et Kim Greene ont un petit Mitsubishi basé sur un 4x4 équipé raid. Clive at Ann Barker avec leur grand camin Mercedes, et bien sûr Norman Seddon était venu avec son Landrover à toit pivotant. Plein d'idées et d'astuces furent appréciées à cette occasion. Ceux d'entre nous qui ont un CCar blanc standard se sentaient un peu dépassés, néanmoins tout le monde s'est accordé pour reconnaître qu'avec un camion 4x2 on peut faire des voyages très convenables.

Un nouveau membre, Ivan McLellen, originaire de Nouvelle Zélande, fut accueilli et nommé photographe officiel. Ses vues très marquées et orientées dans tous les azimuts ont bien pimenté les échanges. Don & Kim Greene ont profité de l'occasion pour confier leur cactus mexicain aux soins attentifs de Ryan et Caroline Down jusqu'à leur retour en Angleterre l'année prochaine. Erik Lea et Randi Sorlie de Norvège se sont présentés à pied, car le ferry n'était pas un bon moyen pour venir en CCar pour seulemment un week-end, Ils ont amené une bouteille d'aquavit qui fut amplement testée. Carl et Mary Hunter er Maureen Middletown ont envoyé leurs meilleurs vœux depuis le Canada. Peter et Janet Milner ont adressé leurs regrets d'être indisponibles pour raison de santé.

La prochaine assemblée annuelle est déjà programmée pour les 3-5 septembre 2010, quelque part au centre de l'Angleterre.
